Two monsoons cross Sri Lanka at different times of year, so one coast is usually dry while the other is wet. That makes it a year-round destination, as long as you go to the right side.
| Region | Best months | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| South and west coasts | December–April | Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle, golf in Colombo and Hambantota |
| Hill country | January–April | Kandy, Nuwara Eliya golf, tea estates, the hill train |
| East coast | May–September | Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay, golf at China Bay |
| Cultural Triangle | All year | Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa |
Busy and quiet months
December is the busiest month: about 259,000 visitors arrived in December 2025. May is the quietest, at about 133,000. Prices for hotels and villas follow the same pattern, so May, June and September are good months for value on the east coast.
Our advice
- For golf and the south coast, travel between January and March.
- For beaches in July or August, go east.
- Book Christmas and New Year early; many hotels add a gala-dinner supplement.
